Recipe for Airborne Honey Slice

Today we made Airborne Honey Slice.  This is the recipe if you want to try it. We made it in the frying pan and it set much faster:

Try this great kids' recipe: Airborne Honey Bubble Slice

125g butter
2-3 Tbsp honey
125g brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
4 cups rice bubbles

Melt all the liquid ingredients in the microwave and pour over the rice
bubbles.

Mix and spread onto a flat tray, making the slice as thick as you want.

Refrigerate for 4 hours.

Cut into squares and store in the fridge if you like them chewy, or out of the fridge if you like them soft.
You can add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder for a chocolate version.

Great Improvement in Reading and Writing Eric!

Well done for Reading Your Book Every Morning Ameya!

Thanks for Being a Reliable Computer Monitor Ania!

Playground done!

Wasn't it sweet when it was finished:

Symmetry

We explored symmetry in Maths:

Structures

Just as bees build their honeycomb structure to live in, with the playground as inspiration, we thought we would build our own:

New Playground

The new playground took shape before our eyes:

We love fireworks!

And this is our favourite fireworks video.

We are learning about Guy Fawkes. He tried to blow up Parliament buildings in England because he was unhappy with the King. In the UK Guy Fawkes night is also known as Bonfire night. Find out more here:
Bonfire night

Diwali activities

During the week we coloured in rangoli patterns and decorated them with glitter glue. We learned all about the diva lamps filled with oil that are lit during Diwali time. We heard about the massive fireworks that are set off on the 5th day of Diwali and this year it coincided with our Guy Fawkes.

Rangoli Mandala Watch this amazing Rangoli Mandala.

Mrs Makani had a go at making burfi out of ricotta cheese, butter, milk powder and sugar. It was like a milk fudge. You might have to ask the kids how that went!

Happy Diwali - Saal Mubarak

This month we celebrated Diwali - the Indian Festival of Lights that heralds the Hindu New Year. We listened to stories about Sita and Ram. Nishita visited us from Room 3 to share her Diwali greeting card. She brought in a Salwar Kameesz and put it on so we could see what her fancy clothes looked like. She told us about the 5 days of Diwali celebrations. Olive tried on Clio's Salwar Kameezs. Ariana's sister Zara had a very pretty dress on for her visit to Diwali celebrations. Several children from our class had Mhendi patterns on their hands. Ria's Mum even made some burfi for us to eat, yum! What a fun and colourful time.

Dancing at the disco

We had a fantastic time at the bee theme disco though some of us enjoyed the food and drink more than the bee boogie. There were prizes and amazing costumes. I even saw some old school limbo going on.

Dear Parents/Caregivers

School Trip: Motat ~ 805 Great North Road, Western Springs
Thursday 12 December 2013

During our Bee Power topic this term we had a focus on the beehive where we looked at the structure of beehives and honeycombs. As part of our learning this term, Rooms 13 and 23 will be visiting MOTAT to take part in a ‘Simple Mechanisms’ workshop. This workshop will require the children to apply their technology knowledge to solve a simple practical technology problem.

The children will be travelling to and from MOTAT by bus. There will be a cost of $9.00/$10.00 for entry and to cover the cost of travel. Accompanying parents will be free and will need to take their own transport and meet us on Stadium Road, Gate C.  If you can be a parent helper and need a ride, please let us know so we can arrange car pooling. We will leave school approximately 9:00am and arrive back at school 2:30pm.

Children will need appropriate footwear, a packed lunch and water. Applying sunblock at home would also be helpful.

If you are able to support us with parent help, we ask that pre-schoolers are not brought along. This is to ensure safety and that numbers are kept to a minimum.

Thank you
Tania Makani, Lisa Thompson, Trisha O’Connell

Tuesday Bee Keeper Visit

Oliver McCurdy came to school to talk to us about his work and show us his gear and equipment. The absolute highlight of his visit was a beehive with around 50 000 bees inside, scurrying frantically to continue the work of the hive. Room 23 wanted Oliver to open up the hive and take out a bee to look at, but Oliver thought that probably wasn't a good idea. We saw his protective gear and his smoker that makes the bees less active. We held some beeswax that gets scraped off the frames inside the hive and we even saw the spray that is used to get rid of the Varroa bee mite.

Monday flower finding

Bees need the pollen and nectar in flowers and flowers need bees for pollination so they can produce lots more flowers. To make sure the bees have food in our school, we went looking for flowers they might like. We trotted over to the red Manuka bush by the hall that had many tiny pretty flowers and what do you know? There were bees collecting nectar. I was not fast or tall enough to get photos of the bees but look at the flowers we have in and around the school. On some of them you may even see the pollen.

Friday Honey Tasting Day

Rewarewa tree in flower

These are the 4 honeys we tried on Friday. The first is Vipers Bugloss Honey from Airborne Honey. Airborne Honey sent our Syndicate different samples of honey and we tried this one on our toast. It is very light in colour and is runny. It was delicious. Vipers Bugloss is another name for Blue Borage. Find out more here- Vipers Bugloss Honey.

We ran out of bread for toasting but that didn't stop us.We tried Rewarewa honey next. It was firmer, darker and had a richer flavour. Yum! Rewarewa is also known as the NZ honeysuckle.
We had to dig into the Bush honey. It is like Manuka, only it has nectar from other bush flowers as well. Also nicely flavoured. 2 and 3 were mainly the favourites.

Cinnamon was either loved or hated. Some children liked it because it tasted like doughnuts and others thought it was just plain wrong! Feel free to have a taste when you are next in.

Room 23 Says Farewell To Mrs Baird and We Reflect on our Year

Mrs Baird has been visiting Room 20 this week and lending a helping hand in the mornings as the New Entrants roll continues to grow. From next week she will be working with Miss Watson in Room 20, receiving and teaching the children who have just started school. Aren't they lucky to have a teacher as wonderful as Mrs Baird helping them on their learning journey?

Although that means Mrs Baird will not be in our classroom, she will just be across the way so we can visit and give her a happy wave when we see her and she will pop in occasionally to see how we are. Noho ora mai, Mrs Baird, Take care.

It is incredible to think that the children are entering their second year at school. Some of our highlights during the year would include:

  • the beach trip in Term 1.
  • the boat making during that term.
  • the Maori topic in Term 2.
  • the Museum trip.
  • the practice and effort that went into our Production and the tremendous support shown by whanau. Thanks in particular to Alan (Thomas' granddad),Simon (Ezra's dad) and Shane (Mr Baird) for volunteering their time, their equipment and their technical expertise. Looking forward to that movie!
  • Coming second in the Ballistics Challenge.
  • Assembly in Term 3 - What a catchy song that 'Slippery Fish' is.
And we have a whole other Term to go:-)

Mrs Frances Britz (Fran) our Teaching Assistant continues to work in Room 23 supporting us in in furthering our learning goals. Thanks Fran!
